What AI agents can do on Cashfree's checkout page
A web page is usually built for a person to read and click. An AI agent often has to work out what each button does, which uses a lot of computing effort. Cashfree said an agent can use an average of nearly 2 million tokens to decode a page before a transaction.
With WebMCP, the checkout page lists the actions an agent can take. These include reading the order total and choosing among the available payment modes. Cashfree said this can cut the tokens an agent needs to finish a checkout by more than 40%.
Why the customer still approves every payment
Cashfree said the customer still authorises the payment. For a UPI payment, the customer approves it with their PIN in their own UPI app. Agents cannot enter card details through WebMCP.
How Cashfree describes the early demand from agents
The company said it spoke to more than 50 founders building AI agents before the announcement.
Where Cashfree stands after the announcement
Cashfree was founded in 2015 by Reeju Datta and Akash Sinha. It offers a payment gateway, cross-border payments, payouts and banking APIs. The company says it handles more than $80 billion in annual payment volume.
