How the 5 lakh estimate was arrived at
The industry figure is an estimate built from the carmakers' own monthly disclosures. Maruti Suzuki's Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, gave the range.
"My take is, the industry should be between 5.25-5.3 lakh units"
Reports differ on last year's base, so the year-on-year growth for the whole industry is quoted as 12 to 15 percent depending on the outlet. Wholesales also differ from retail: they measure shipments to dealers, while retail and registration data count vehicles bought by customers.
