What BlackBuck does

BlackBuck runs a digital platform for India's truck operators. It brings four kinds of services onto one platform.

  • Payments. BlackBuck distributes FASTags issued by partner banks, so truck operators can pay tolls, and it runs a fuel payments and loyalty offering with oil marketing companies.
  • Telematics. Trucks carry a tracking device, and the operator pays a subscription fee. BlackBuck also earns service fees.
  • Freight loads. Shippers and truck operators use the platform to find each other, and both sides can buy subscription plans. BlackBuck also acts as a freight broker, where it settles the freight with the truck operator.
  • Vehicle finance. Its non-banking finance subsidiary, BlackBuck Finserve, offers loans for used commercial vehicles, and lending partners also use the platform.

How BlackBuck makes money from payments, subscriptions and freight

BlackBuck has five sources of revenue: commission from FASTag partner banks, commission from oil marketing companies on fuel, subscription fees from truck operators, subscription fees from shippers, and interest income, loan service fees and other fees from borrowers. In the financial statements these appear as commission income, subscription fees, service fees and others.

Payments and telematics together made up 94.53% of FY24 revenue from continuing operations. The value of payments that flow through the platform, called gross transaction value or GTV, is not revenue. BlackBuck earns an agreed percentage of it as commission.

Freight brokerage works differently. The shipper pays BlackBuck for the freight, BlackBuck pays the truck operator, and the difference is its revenue.
